2 million EV units registration in a single year – A New Record
This year has been great for electric vehicles (battery-powered cars and bikes) in India. For the first time ever, more than 2 million electric vehicles have been registered – and the year isn’t even over yet! More people are buying electric vehicles because there are better options available, prices are improving, and the government continues to support them. So far this year, 2.02 million electric vehicles have been registered, compared to 1.95 million in all of 2024.
Recently many government policies changed, people are still buying electric vehicles. This is because batteries cost less now, there are more charging stations, and new models can travel longer distances.
Electric Bikes Lead the Way
Most of the growth comes from electric bikes and scooters. They make up 57% of all electric vehicle sales this year. Poonam Upadhyay, an expert at Crisil Ratings, says growth will continue in 2025, though a bit slower than last year. Two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and new four-wheeler models will all help keep sales growing.
Electric bike sales have reached 1.2 million this year, beating last year’s total of 1.15 million. Big companies are helping drive this growth by offering better prices, longer battery range, and selling through many dealers.
Electric Cars Growing Fast Electric cars and SUVs are also doing well, with sales jumping 57% to reach 156,455 vehicles so far this year, compared to 99,429 in all of 2024. More people are buying electric cars because there are more affordable options and they cost less to run over time.
